Guji Bookkisa Shaakkisoo

After spending too long in the shadow of its neighbours Sidamo and Yirgacheffe, Guji has deservedly become a recognised coffee area in recent years. A combination of fertile red earth, high altitude slopes, unique indigenous heirloom varietals and an ancient coffee cultivating culture all contribute to the region producing some of the most exciting and characterful coffees in the world.

 

This exceptional coffee was grown by smallholder farmers from the Guji zone in the Oromia Region. Here, farmers expertly grow ‘garden coffee’ and selectively hand-pick their coffee cherries, delivering them within the same day to the nearby washing station where they are processed and exported by Sookoo.

 

Sookoo, managed by Ture Ware and his family, is a sustainable organisation set up to help farmers in all aspects of their coffee production journey, from agricultural training to connecting them to the global coffee market. Additionally, their community projects have included building roads to connect remote villages, constructing schools and improving health facilities.
