  • The story...

Thanks to Colombia’s ideal growing conditions and rich agricultural heritage, it is the third largest coffee producing country in the world. You may imagine such a vast volume of coffee being farmed by large estates with many acres of coffee trees, however the majority of this production comes from small family run farms like Finca Canta Ranas.

Canta Ranas translates as ‘singing frogs’ in dedication to the many frogs that live (and chirp!) on the banks of the impressive Magdalena River nearby. The farm is owned by Edward Sandoval, a third-generation coffee producer who studied Agroindustrial Engineering and worked in coffee quality assurance for close to two decades. Returning to his coffee farming roots has been an overwhelming success due to his extensive knowledge of varietals and quality processes. This lot, comprising the mythical Chiroso varietal, being an excellent example of this.

Chiroso is a rare and sought after varietal grown only in the Colombian mountains. However, recent genetic studies have discovered that Chiroso is in fact from an Ethiopian landrace varietal. It is still a mystery how the varietal made its way from Ethiopia to Colombia. Luckily it made it across the globe as Chiroso grows well at high elevations within the Andes and consistently delivers excellent cup profiles reminiscent of Ethopian coffees. Expect sweet, aromatic and complex notes.
