Rwenzori Bugoye DECAF - Uganda
A smooth, sweet decaf from the Rwenzori Mountains of western Uganda, naturally processed and gently decaffeinated using the sugarcane method. Expect a complex, rounded cup with layered fruit sweetness, notes of cherry, marzipan and dark chocolate.
The story...
While Uganda is traditionally associated with robusta, the lush mountain ranges in the west of the country have long been recognised as ideal for producing high-quality speciality coffee. Over the past decade, investment in training and infrastructure across these regions has begun to bear fruit, helping Uganda build a growing reputation in the speciality coffee world.
The Rwenzori Mountains, famously known as the “Mountains of the Moon,” offer the high altitudes, fertile soils, and biannual rainfall ideal for growing arabica coffee. The Bakonzo people have farmed these foothills for generations, and in recent years, with the support of Kyagalanyi Coffee Ltd (KCL), they have continued to improve both cultivation and processing techniques.
The smallholders use an approach known as share farming, where families help one another cultivate their land. Hand-picked cherries are delivered to Bugoye washing station using KCL’s free transport service, where the coffee is carefully processed. This lot was then selected for sugarcane decaffeination - a natural, highly selective process that preserves the coffee’s complex flavour profile while removing more than 97% of the caffeine.
