  • The story...

This exceptional coffee was grown by a collective of smallholder farmers situated in the northwestern highlands of Guatemala, where the dry, hot winds and extreme altitude provide optimal growing and processing conditions for high quality speciality coffee. The collective takes its name from the Mayan legend of Hunbatz and Hunchouen, talented dancers and artists who transformed into monkeys after finding themselves unable to escape a growing tree.

We are proud to have sourced this coffee in collaboration with Javier, founder of Caribbean Goods. Javier is a Guatemalan born and now Glasgow based coffee importer with an overwhelming passion for and knowledge of coffee. To Javier (and us) Guatemalan coffee is more than a commodity, more than a delicious drink. It is a way of life and an opportunity to support the cooperatives like Hunchouen and their surrounding communities.

This commitment to the local community has led to Caribbean Goods teaming up with the MAIA Impact School, an organisation that empowers indigenous girls through education. For every sack of this coffee we buy from Caribbean Goods, a donation is made to this pioneering organisation.
