This exquisite coffee was cultivated by smallholder farmers living around the town of Banco Gotete in the world famous coffee growing region of Yirgacheffe. The region’s steep and fertile highlands are dotted with farms growing ‘garden coffee’, approximately a hectare of coffee interspersed with other crops such as mangos.
Legu Trading helps farmers organise the processing and export of coffee in the Banco Gotete area. They pay premium price for coffee cherries and provide well paid, year-round jobs in their mills for many locals. Here, the special heirloom varietals are selectively hand-picked and processed naturally, leaving the coffee to dry, still encased within their cherries, before pulping. This results in a cup full of deep fruitiness and fermented notes.
For many years, Ethiopian coffee, some of the best in the world, was for the most part untraceable but in 2017 new laws have encouraged it be marketed and sold with full traceability intact, thus limiting black market dealing and allowing producers to demand higher prices for their coffee.
