Buf Nyarisiza (Rwanda)
Fully Washed 100% Red Bourbon. Silky & balanced with notes of plum, syrup & black cherry.
Buf Café was founded in 2003 by the inspirational business woman Epiphanie Mukashyaka, a widow of the Rwandan genocide and civil war of 1994. After the devastation of the war she set about rebuilding and developing her business and with it the local community, with the assistance of the PEARL project. Epiphanie and her family now produce and export coffee across the world, while offering social and economic support to local women and their families.
This 100% Red Bourbon coffee is produced by a community of farmers, who gather together to process their coffee cherries at the Nyarusiza washing station owned by Epiphanie. The level of care that each station takes over their processing is impressive. Every step of the process is designed to weed out poor quality beans and improve the flavour of the final cup.
Transformational programmes such as PEARL have proved invaluable in rebuilding Rwanda’s coffee production in the wake of the 1994 genocide and have succeeded in switching focus from quantity to quality coffee production. This focus on quality is clear at Buf, with the co-op producing outstanding lots, such as this coffee, year after year.
